    Bridport Pagan Moot Presents

    A Performance by Jerry Bird

Carolan – the Life and Music of an Irish Harper

Though the harp is by no means peculiar to Ireland it has been regarded since mediaeval times as supremely the musical instrument of the Irish. Much Irish harp music is lost in the mists of antiquity, but fortunately over 200 pieces survive which are attributed to Turlough O’ Carolan, the last of the great Irish harpers.

Folklorist and accomplished musician Jerry Bird presents a selection of Turlough O’ Carolan’s most beautiful airs and dance tunes, using his own arrangements for classical and folk guitar, and interspersed with historical facts and anecdotes about this fascinating and colourful composer who singlehandedly invented a new musical genre – that of ‘Irish baroque’ music
